Sempell AG, a part of Pentair, supplied practically all control and isolating valves for the high pressure turbine, boiler and plant balance systems for RWE's BOA 2&3 initiative in its largest ever order from a conventional power plant.
As part of a comprehensive package for the power generation sector, Pentair was able to offer custom-made valve know-how to withstand the extremely high temperatures and pressures required to achieve maximum efficiency from lignite. At Neurath for example, the new systems will achieve an efficiency of over 43%, as compared to the old units which achieved 31%. In achieving an electrical output of 1,100 MW per unit, it will become the largest lignite plant in the world.
To meet the necessary design criteria and guarantee future reliability in this critical application a new high alloy steel was employed for the first time. The project involved working in close cooperation with German forgings and pipe manufacturers to qualify and produce this material. The Sempell facility boasts state-of-the-art, high-quality German manufacturing, innovative planning and design, as well as excellent service and maintenance programs all of which influenced RWE - the largest producer of electricity in Germany.
